Many years ago, the area school boards of Russell, Tyler and Ruthton could see the  trend of declining enrollment and were faced with the situation of finding another way to continue funding education. It was very important to them to maintain the same high standard of education they were accustomed to providing. But, with the lack of students also came a lack of education dollars. These standards were found in a pairing agreement that has withstood the test of time. The first pairing agreement between Russell and Tyler began in the fall of 1981. A few years later, the Ruthton school board was faced with the same situation and joined the RT pairing in the fall of 1987.

Today the Russell, Tyler and Ruthton School boards (RTR), have established a curriculum, which they feel, is second to none. With the pairing agreement between the three districts, class size has been increased to a manageable size, making it a more cost-effective operation. Along with class size, came programs that could be maintained rather than discontinued.

In April of 2006, the three communities of Russell, Tyler, and Ruthton voted overwhelmingly to consolidate the three districts into one unified district.  The new district is still called RTR, but our district number has changed.  We are now ISD 2902.

These are exciting times for all of us in these three communities as we are now taking a venture into the consolidation world and looking forward to continue our excellence in education.
