
Our study of poetry will consist of three parts. We will be studying famous poets and their works, types of poetry, and the elements of poetry.
You will also be actively engaged in the production and performance of poetry. You will be memorizing, writing, and performing poetry.
Memorization (these will be written in class)
Thu. 11/6—first 8 lines of “Stopping by Snowy Woods” or “Pasture”
Tue. 11/11—“Harlem” or “Dreams”
Thu. 11/13—“A Book” by Dickinson or 1st 8 lines of “Prologue for R&J”
Tue. 11/18—“The Red Wheelbarrow”
Tue. 11/25—1st 8 lines of “Still I Rise” or refrain of “I Know Why…”
Performance
You will choose poetry to read in front of the class. You must have at least 20 lines of poetry to read. This may be a few smaller poems or one longer one. The poetry may come from the packet or my poetry portfolio. You may choose poetry from another source, but it must be approved first. You will be graded on your vocal expression and performance. Everyone will perform on
November 20 or possibly December 2
Booklet
You will also be writing your own poetry. These will all be put together into a booklet. The first poem will be the “Bio Poem.” You will need 16 more poems. Each poem should be titled and labeled, identifying what kind of poem it is. All poems should be appropriate material for school. Do not be derogatory or vulgar. The booklet will be graded on following the directions for each kind of poem, quality of poems, and on overall appearance/neatness. The poems may be typed or hand-written. No more than 2 poems on a page. The booklet also needs a cover page with a title and your name.

++ 2 quatrains (must be rhyming) ++ 2 haiku (3 lines each)
++ 1 limerick (5 lines) ++ 1 wish poem (12 lines)
++ 1 parody (may be of a poem we’ve read ++ 1 picture poem
or a nursery rhyme—at least 5 lines) ++ 1 poem of your choice
